Week 4 Game Ideas Devlog

To prepare for making a new fleshed out game prototype with a team, it was necessary to brainstorm some interesting ideas to serve as inspiration.  The brief was for games to follow the theme "Connected" be it physically, through space and time etc.

Idea 1 - Time Travelling Soldier

A peaceful world is under attack and it’s up to you, a cutting-edge time-travelling robot, to avert the grim future that your enemies seek to create.  Use travel stations to explore the world in its past, present and future states to gain a tactical advantage and seize victory.  Perhaps a destroyed bridge will still be intact if you travel to the past.  Maybe there are secrets to glean from the dystopian future where your enemy reigns supreme.  Once you’re prepared, face your foes in third-person shooter combat that focusses on snappy movement and evasion.  This idea could prove interesting because I believe it allows for an ideal gameplay loop that intersperses intense moments of action with quieter moments of problem-solving.

Target Audience: 13 – 30 yr old console gamers

Prototype focus: Developing an optimal way to switch between the three scenes (past, present, or future) or to modify one scene, whichever may be more efficient.  Also establishing a distinct aesthetic (lighting, shaders etc.) for each scene: a bright and cheery past, an intense battle-ridden present, and a bleak dystopian future.

Idea 2 - Connector Gun

Use your Connector Gun in a puzzle platformer to make your way through a weird and wondrous world.  Shoot any two objects and they will be pulled toward each other to meet in the middle.  Connect the objects around you in unique ways to bridge gaps, create towers to new heights, join two wires to transfer an electrical current, and so on.  I believe there are many different possibilities for puzzles with this one mechanic, which could allow for varied gameplay without the need to program many different kinds of player interaction.

Target Audience: 20 - 40 yr old casual players

Prototype focus: Demonstrating multiple ways that the gameplay mechanic can be used to solve puzzles.
